Human Rights USA is currently focused on the following emerging areas of human rights law:
  • Accountability for Torturers : Ensuring that survivors of major human rights abuses get their day in court by supporting criminal prosecutions and bringing civil claims on behalf of survivors in U.S. courts
  • Challenges to Habeas Corpus : Challenging statutory provisions limiting access by refugees and suspected terrorists to the core remedy of habeas corpus
  • Human Rights & National Security : Challenging illegal anti-terrorism tactics like grants of immunity to U.S. officials for war crimes and major human rights abuses, the use of military tribunals in terrorism cases, and the “rendition to torture” policy
  • Refugee Rights : Defending refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S. from being returned to countries where they will be victims of torture, especially women who are victims of sex trafficking and forced marriage
